History buffs may want to set aside a few hours to explore the Parris Island History Museum, located at 111 Panama Street in Port Royal. Housed in the War Memorial Building and offering an in depth peek into the life of a marine in South Carolina, it provides 10,000 square feet of exhibits, artifacts, and memorabilia about the history of Marines and is also a premier research facility, offering historical archives and a manuscript collection second to none. For those who prefer exploring history from outside, a visit to Fort Frederick Heritage Preserve, 601 Old Fort Road in Port Royal, offers scenic water views, walking trails shaded by mature trees, and the remains of Fort Frederick.
