First Adventures in Savannah

You only have a day in town and you definitely want to hit all the hot spots, so we often suggest that a trolley trip may be in order for their first visit. Savannah Old Town Trolley Tours offers a variety of tours of the town, designed to give visitors a proper introduction to this historic city. Offering a few night tours that may be saved for a return visit, it’s their daily on/off tour that we highly recommend. Exploring 100 points of interest and offering 15 stops throughout the day, guests can jump off at the spots that interest them most, climbing back on at a later point and resuming their tour. The trolley drivers have a passion for Savannah and enjoy sharing them with guests, providing a narration that is never recorded and is always guaranteed to capture your interest, giving travelers a unique insiders peek into the streets and stories of this beautiful town.

The Hostess City of the South

Known to everyone who has visited for its hospitality, Savannah is so beloved by its residents that they often find it hard to leave, even when death takes them away. Even as it is called the Hostess City of the South, it is also recognized as the most haunted city in the nation and there are many local spots where you can engage in your own amateur ghost hunting, or at the very least, perhaps hear the whispers of those who walked the planks long ago while enjoying a delicious meal at the Pirate’s House, a local restaurant where spirits and hospitality go hand in hand. Located at 20 E Broad Street this brick building started its life’s journey as a saloon and rest stop where unlucky guests often found themselves shanghaied into a life at sea, and we hear they are plenty unhappy about their fates.

The Parks of Savannah

Laid out in an easy to navigate grid system, Savannah is also one of the nation’s first planned communities and each square is often marked with a lush parks dominated with mature trees draped in moss. Adding a verdant beauty to these public spaces, the live oaks, myrtles, and native magnolia trees have stood here for hundreds of years, witnessing the lives of all who play here. Explore the tranquil beauty of the fountain at Forsyth Park, examine the memorials of Emmet Park, laugh over the antics of pups doing their thing in the shaded dog run of Daffin Park as you walk along lakeside trails, and savor the tranquility of Warren Square where its verdant landscape and benches give guests a place to just sit and be.

The Place Where History Stays Alive

The homes that line the graceful streets of Savannah have stood there for centuries, serving as memorials to days long past. Explore where the Girl Scouts were born with a visit to the Juliette Gordon Lowe Birthplace Museum, devour fine meals at the Olde Pink House, constructed in 1789 as a family home but today serving as a renowned fine dining destination, and take another shot at lifting the veil between the living and the spirit world with a ghost tour at the Mercer Williams House Museum. The beauty of history is celebrated in Savannah, and you will feel as if you are a part of that history.

Celebrating the Arts in Savannah

There are plenty of souvenir shops in Savannah but your favorite souvenirs may come from the gift shops of their local art museums or even from some of the best art galleries in the state. SCAD Museum of Art, located at 601 Turner Boulevard is an extension of the Savannah College of Art & Design, offers a beautiful selection of art created by up and coming artists, while Telfair Museums, 207 W York Street, concentrates on the classics, taking advantage of its position as the first public art museum in the US. Also providing an interactive gallery for the tiny travelers in your party, this is a great place for families to explore.

A Taste of the Town

Southern food is renowned the world over and Savannah is known for its classic cuisine and when lunch time rolls around during your Savannah day trip, you will be ready for a visit to Kim’s Café, located at 714 Martin Luther King Jr Boulevard B. Offering classic Southern dishes served with classic Southern Hospitality, this inexpensive café will haunt your dreams in the best of ways, long after you have left the city and returned to real life. If you have room after your shrimp basket lunch, we implore you to order the banana pudding for dessert; it tastes even better than the one your grandmother made and just like hers, the extra ingredient of love is included in every bowl. Kim’s Café is closed on Mondays and opens at 8 AM closing at 5 on every day except Saturday when they close at 1:30. atrina
