History in Charleston, SC 

Charleston was initially located on the Ashley River in Albemarle Point, where the settlers landed in 1670. Ten years later, the city moved to its current location on Oyster Point. The city was named Charles Town in honor of King Charles II of England. In downtown Charleston, you can see the remains of the old city wall walking down East Bay Street. 

Dock Street Theatre Dock Street Theatre

Located on the corner of Church and Queen, the Dock Street Theatre is one sight in the city dating back to the 1730s. The site is the location of the first theatrical performance in America and the first opera. However, the original building burned down in the Great Fire of 1740. In the years following, Dock Street Theatre has continued to stand the test of time and has hosted countless performances! 

Charleston City Market 

Constructed between 1804 and the 1830s, the Charleston City Market is one of the most significant buildings in the city. The market is one of the longest-running public markets in the United States. From its entrance, an arcade runs through the center of the building, with vendors selling everything from sweetgrass baskets to jewelry and handmade crafts! Old Exchange Building

Completed in 1771, the Old Exchange Building is one of the most important in American colonial history. The building has hosted George Washington, seen slave auctions, and hosted U.S. constitutional debates. It is viewed as the birthplace of South Carolina and has many stories to tell! Travelers can visit the building and enjoy the tours offered. 

Fort SumterFort Sumter

Located in Charleston Harbor, this fort is an American history legend! The fort was built in 1829 and became the site of the first battle of the American Civil War on April 12, 1861. At the time, Fort Sumter was being used as a Union outpost and was bombarded by Confederate forces. The fort still stands today and offers one of the most immersive experiences in Charleston!
